The Ultima 80 features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. Including the eyepiece the Ultima 80 measures just over 18 inches long and weighs about 3.6 pounds. The rubber eyecup can be removed to expose a standard “T-thread” for attaching a camera. I like the 45* angled eyepiece because I can use a shorter tripod to support the spotting scope while viewing or while taking pictures with a small camera attached to the eyepiece.

The focus ranges from 27 feet to the horizon with just a few turns of the focus knob. When I fold down the rubber eye cup I can keep my glasses on and see the whole 2 degree field of view at 20X magnification. With my glasses on I need very little focus adjustment while I crank the zoom eyepiece from 20X up to 60X. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Ultima 80 gives me a sharp image either way.

The drawback of the tradition crown and flint achromatic lens used in the Ultima 80 Zoom Spotting Scope is a bit of false color, also known as blue fringing or chromatic aberration. Blue fringing seems well controlled at 20X magnification, but it becomes increasingly noticeable as I zoom up to 60X. Celestron also offers the Ultima 80ED and the Regal 80 F-ED spotting scopes which use exotic ED glass lenses to virtually eliminate blue fringing and produce the sharpest possible high power views.

The Leupold rifle scope is clearly a great invention, and like the majority inventions it was born out of need. Most huge inventions evolve from somebody finding a need for something and figuring out how to make it work. The development of the rifle scope began when people started attaching telescopes to rifles to make the most of viewing capabilities. Surveillance Cameras Get Smaller and Better Every Year

Nearly twenty years ago I applied for a job in the surveillance industry not knowing what to expect but in desperate need of any employment. Once hired, I was exposed to an interesting side of life I had never seen before. Surveillance is a word in everyone’s vocabulary these days. Home surveillance and business security are an essential aspect of modern day living. The surveillance camera in particular, is at the heart of it all. Back in the early 1990’s, the surveillance camera industry was really taking off. Although surveillance cameras were available for many years prior, the idea of recording everyday life as a crime deterrence and as a tool in aiding conviction of criminals was spreading far and wide.

Typically surveillance cameras of the time recorded motion in black and white. Although color cams were available, the camera and the color capable monitor were an added cost that not many individuals deemed unnecessary. The cameras themselves were housed in cases sometimes as large as a small shoebox. The lens protruded from the camera. The cameras required a power supply as well as a cable to carry the video signal to the monitor or recording equipment. Cameras placed outdoors in geographical locations susceptible to inclement weather, needed an weatherproof enclosure, which was, in most cases heated to prevent the camera and lens from freezing. The resolution and overall picture quality was neanderthal by today’s standards, but a blurred or grainy sequence of activity was better than nothing at all. Recording was a chore, but we didn’t realize it back then. The VTR, or video tape recorder, was an innovation like no other. It enabled those of us in the video surveillance industry to record and maintain the images captured by the cameras. This was replaced in short time by the time lapse recorder which used less tapes to record longer periods of time. We no longer needed an entire closet to store surveillance tapes, just a shelf or two.

Times change and the technology of today leaves us wondering how we ever got by in the past. Surveillance cameras produce motion images in near high definition. Camera size and weight have been reduced dramatically thanks to innovative design and manufacture. Many cameras are available wireless totally eliminating the need for a video cable. Monitors have fallen in price and increased substantially in resolution and clarity. Recording has evolved into hard drive space and dvd media requiring far less storage space with light-years more capability than methods of yesterday.

Interesting security and surveillance footage has become the talk of the town and the basis for many interesting television programs. The impact these cameras have made on society is incredible, the list of examples goes on and on. I’m certain the concept of filming and recording criminal activity and capturing just about anything else on video will continue to evolve in line with technology.

Kitt Peak National Observatory, the world’s largest collection of telescopes, is located high above the Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O’odham Reservation, 55 miles southwest of Tucson, AZ. Home to 22 optical and two radio telescopes, the observatory represents dozens of astronomical research institutions and is operated by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO). The attraction is ideal for student group travelers interested in science and astronomy.

In 1958 Kitt Peak was selected as the site for the national observatory and was built through a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The land was leased on a perpetual agreement from the Tohono O’odham tribe. The observatory with 23 telescopes is the largest, most diverse gathering of astronomical instruments in the world. The most famous telescope at Kitt Peak is the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, the largest solar telescope in the world. Kitt Peak is also famous for having the first telescope, an old 91 cm reflector, which was originally used to search for near-Earth asteroids.

The Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center is open daily to visitors from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Guided tours are offered daily at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. and group tours are available by appointment.

The center offers three, one-hour guided tours that begin in the visitor center with a brief introductory orientation:

- The first tour begins at 10 a.m. and visits the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope.

- The second tour begins at 11:30 a.m. and visits the 2.1-m Telescope, one of the early workhorses of Kitt Peak. Built in 1964, the telescope is still in high demand each night.

- The third tour begins at 1:30 p.m. and visits the Mayall 4-m Telescope, a Tucson landmark since 1973. Visible from many points in Tucson, the 4-m is the largest optical telescope on Kitt Peak, and receives four times more requests for use than there are clear nights each year. From the Visitor Gallery in the telescope, students have a 360-degree view of Kitt Peak and the surrounding landscape.

Students who participate in the Nightly Observing Program have the opportunity to view some of the finest night skies on earth. This 3-hour program is available from July through mid-October and begins at approximately 9 p.m. Students arrive prior to sunset so they can observe the sun setting over the Tohono O-odham Reservation. Their evening begins with a tour of the exhibits, interactive displays, and a light meal. Then, the observatory staff review recent advances in the field of astronomy to provide an understandable perspective of the earth’s place in the universe.

Following the orientation, students then take a visual journey through the cosmos with the aid of the observatory’s three telescopes. Gathering in one of the Visitor Center’s domes, students observe the heavens through a reflecting telescope. Observers see highlights of the particular time of year, such as planets, multiple star systems, planetary nebulae, and galaxies.

Observers also become acquainted with the Summer Triangle, which involves three special stars, each located in a separate celestial constellation. Taken together, these three stars, Altair, Deneb, and Vega, form a large triangle, easily discernable in the Tucson sky with the naked eye,

The observatory’s Weather Program was created to allow visitors access to the site, even when conditions are not conducive to watching the skies. The program includes many portions of the regular Nightly Observing Program such as a light meal, followed by an introduction to the National Observatory and a look at the hands-on display of telescopes.

The program also teaches students how to use star charts and allows them to participate in activities using binoculars and scaled models. It concludes, if the weather permits, with a view of the universe through a telescope.
